Alan Greenspan on Education in the U.S.
"we don't recognize how significant our education system problems are. we are going to phase out of our labor force a highly educated very skilled, highly productive part of our labor force and it's going to be replaced essentially by those kids who have been chancing so poorly in international education comparisons." - Alan Greenspan, Former Federal Reserve chairman today on CNBC.

From "Is America Falling Off The Flat Earth"
Published in 2007 by the National Academy of Sciences:
"According to the most recently available data, 69% of US fifth- through eighth-grade
students are being taught mathematics by teachers who do not possess a degree or cer-
tificate in mathematics. Fully 93% of students in those grades are being taught physical
sciences by teachers with no degree or certificate in the physical sciences. Even in high school, the corresponding likelihoods are 31% for mathematics, 61% for chemistry, and 67% for physics. (In contrast, 81% of the physical-education teachers in grades 5-8 and 9-12 have degrees in physical education.) Many entire school districts do not have a single teacher with an academic degree in mathematics or science. "

There are about 250 Mathnasiums around the country including three in NYC. I'll be the fourth. Mathnasium is a system of diagnosing the gaps in children's math literacy which is extremely common these days as schools push children towards algebra too quickly. Once those gaps are identified, a customized curriculum is assembled for the student. He or she attends Mathnasium twice a week for their "math workout." It's been proven to be effective and fun!

Mathnasium of Brooklyn Heights
This is what's next for me. On May 1st, I will be opening a Mathnasium Math Learning Center in Brooklyn, NY.
U.S. kids are falling further behind the rest of the world everyday.
In 2000, American students finished 20th out of the top industrialized nations in math. In 2003, they dropped to 24th....in 2006 they slipped to 26th and in 2009 they dropped to 31st (PISA Reports).
The Wall Street Journal called this an "economic timebomb."
It is my belief that parents must take their children's education into their own hands. Public education has failed us. This is now a national epidemic that will take years to remedy with the help of learning centers like Mathnasium that recognize the need and have a proven record of getting American kids back on track.
I'm thrilled to be a part of this effort.

Credo
I would rather be ashes than dust!
I would rather that my sparks should burn out
in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry-rot.
I would rather be a superb meteor , every atom of me
in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.
The function of man is to live, not to exist.
I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them.
I shall use my time.
-Jack London
